Watched Alec Baldwin rehearse with gun on ‘Rust’ set just before Halyna Hutchins was shot: Video

Video from the set of the doomed Rust movie has now been released, showing Alec Baldwin rehearsing with the gun that fatally shot cameraman Halyna Hutchins. In the clip, which was actually shot by Hutchins just before she was shot, Baldwin, 64, can be seen practicing a “cross-draw” in the fake church on the Bonanza Creek Ranch.

Baldwin, dressed in western attire in the style of the 1880s, is shown drawing the F.lli Pietta 45 Long Colt Revolver to practice the scene. The practice shot has a devastatingly terrifying feel, detailing the moments before the prop gun failed, killed Hutchins and seriously injured director Joel Souza.

The footage, which has no sound, shows Baldwin practicing the movement with the gun, pulling it out of his jacket and pointing almost directly at the camera. Hutchins then flips the camera to establish a setting as Baldwin continues to rehearse. Both Hutchins and director Souza were directly in the firing line of the cannon before it went off.

Souza previously told investigators he heard the phrase “cold gun” as he prepared for the scene — industry statements that indicated the firearm was not loaded. However, he added that he couldn’t remember if the crew checked the gun after returning from a lunch break before shooting the scene.

The video released Monday by the Sante Fe, New Mexico sheriff is part of a number of files being used as evidence in the case to investigate what led to the firearms accident. The data also includes crime scene photos, bodycam footage, dashcam footage, DNA and fingerprint analysis, the coroner’s report, plus data extracted from Baldwin’s cell phone.
