There are many words you could use to describe Tory Burch, most of which are similar to: timeless, classic, sophisticated, preppy. But – with respect – ‘cool’ is a word that hasn’t been used much when discussing the American fashion brand.
I don’t mean that badly, of course. First of all, coolness is completely subjective; secondly, not everyone strives for coolness. (And they shouldn’t!) It’s just that, starting with the Spring 2022 collection, something different started happening at Tory Burch. The designer is still building on her lexicon of American sportswear, and there are certainly artistic influences, but the clothes, for lack of a better word, also look pretty cool.
For fall 2022, Burch notes that she was inspired by the women of New York City, “explored through the shapes, geometry, color and convertibility.” You can watch the various women Burch may have seen on the street come together and then break up again, Dr. Strange mirror dimension style. (Yes, I spent the pandemic getting caught up in Marvel movies.) The opening look features a tracksuit paired with tailored pants and a sequined scarf — not necessarily elements you’d think of together.
The sculptural shoulders of the previous season find a continuous line here in floral jackets and wool coats, continuing in origami folded corsets and off-the-shoulder knits. There is also a surprising amount of beading and embellishment. More expected from Burch is the play of colours: a speck of acid green on a brown maxi dress, for example, or a purple-red harlequin print on a polo.
The styling certainly lends itself to the overall shift we see. Burch brought Brian Molloy back to work on the show in the fall of 2022. (He’s also styled the runway for the spring of 2022, as well as some pre-collection lookbooks for the brand.) And, like José Criales-Unzueta pointed outMolloy collaborates with other New York luxury labels Proenza Schouler and The Row.
It didn’t necessarily all work out – I’m still trying to decide how I feel about the beaded corset with a peplum paired with a car wash skirt, which is a lot of look in my opinion – but it’s always interesting to have a designer like Burch do something. trying to see news.
