Once the Rick Owens show rolls around, you know you’re about to see something unlike anything else you’ve seen during the four fashion weeks so far. The designer’s Fall 2022 collection, shown in Paris on Thursday, was no exception — though there was something about it that felt momentous (thanks to goth-leaning celebs like Julia Fox and Ye perhaps?), while also being completely was removed from all definite time or space. With his retro-futuristic sensibility, Owens has always had a knack for this.
On the show, models walked solemnly surrounded by clouds of smoke, which gave the whole thing a cinematic, otherworldly feel – especially as they came out in a group for the finale as an army of well-dressed apocalypse survivors. Many were dressed in protective outerwear: long woolen coats topped with cozy stoles; armor-like vests and jackets with footballer-shaped shoulder pads or inflated life jackets; elegant capes with a “Lord of the Rings” vibe; puffer-coat capes with exaggerated sleeves trailing on the floor; futuristic coats decorated with tufts of fur. Platform boots, which fall above the knee, if not higher, also feel shield-like.
Owens’ beloved camel-alien shoulders feature prominently in the collection, as do his signature extra-long, curve-hugging skirts. Similarly proportioned, ingeniously draped evening gowns, done in iridescent muted colors, are the show’s highlights – a stunning mix of hard and soft elements. I hope someone is brave enough to wear one on the red carpet this awards season, although they would also work as a wardrobe for a post-apocalyptic queen in a movie. (Zendaya in “Dune 2”, maybe?)
