Taylor Swift has released “Carolina,” a new original song she wrote for the upcoming movie Where the Crawdads Sing. Produced by her Folklore collaborator Aaron Dessner of The National, the dark and eerie folk song reflects the mystery and drama of the highly anticipated book-to-screen adaptation.

Based on Delia Owens’ bestseller, Where the Crawdads Sing follows Kya, the “Marsh Girl” who survived alone in the swamps of North Carolina after being abandoned as a child. When a young man named Chase Andrews is found dead, she becomes a suspect for his suspected murder. Normal People and Fresh star Daisy Edgar-Jones stars as Kya, while Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine produces and Olivia Newman (First Match) directs.

Swift references the premise through her song, especially in the last verse: “Oh Carolina knows / why they’ve been saying for years / That I was guilty as sin / And sleep in a liar’s bed.” She seems to have done her homework; when the singer-songwriter teased “Carolina” along with the movie trailer earlier this year, she shared that she was instantly hooked on Crawdads.

“Where The Crawdads Sing is a book I was completely absorbed in reading it years ago,” Swift wrote on Instagram. “As soon as I heard there was a movie in the works starring the incredible @daisyedgarjones and produced by the brilliant @reesewitherspoon I knew I wanted to be a part of it musically. I wrote the song ‘Carolina’ alone and asked my friend @aarondessner to produce it. I wanted to create something ghostly and ethereal to match this enchanting story.”

Edgar-Jones also immediately loved the novel. The actress previously told ELLE: “I read the book in a day and a half and just fell so deeply in love with her and her world, and what the story was about, this idea of loneliness. She’s such a wonderfully complex character – there is a lot of things to get really deep into.”

Swift was also recently linked with another book-to-screen adaptation, Amazon Prime Video’s The Summer I Turned Pretty, based on Jenny Han’s YA novel of the same name. Swift shared a first glimpse of “This Love (Taylor’s Version)” in the trailer and released the full track shortly after. Many of her songs have also been featured in the series, which is now streaming.

Oh Carolina creeks
Flows through my veins
Lost I was born
Lonely I came
I will always be lonely

carolina knows
Why I’ve been wandering for years
Free as these birds
Light as a whisper
carolina knows

And you didn’t see me here
No, they never saw me here

And she’s in my dreams
In the fog, in the clouds
do not go away
I make a fist, I make it count
And there are places I’ll never go
And things only Carolina will ever know

carolina spots
On the dress she left behind
indelible scars
Central points
Blue as the life she fled

Carolina pines
Won’t you cover for me?
Hide me like robes
On the back road
Muddy these webs we weave

And you didn’t see me here
No, they never saw me

And she’s in my dreams
In the fog, in the clouds
do not go away
I make a fist, I make it count
And there are places I’ll never go
And things only Carolina will ever know

And you didn’t see me here
They never saw me here
No, you didn’t seem to me here
they never saw me

Oh Carolina knows
Why have they been saying for years
That I was guilty as sin
And sleep in a liar’s bed
But sleep will come soon
And I won’t meet ghosts
It’s between me
The sand and the sea
carolina knows
