Queen Elizabeth II dies aged 96, Buckingham Palace announces

Buckingham Palace has released a statement saying Queen Elizabeth II has died.

Buckingham Palace announced her death in a short statement, triggering 10 days of national mourning and a torrent of tribute to her long life and record-breaking government.

A statement from Buckingham Palace read: “The Queen passed away peacefully in Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort remain in Balmoral tonight and return to London tomorrow.

The eldest of her four children, Charles, Prince of Wales, who at 73 is the oldest heir to the throne in British history, becomes king immediately.

The queen’s death came after the palace announced on Thursday that doctors were “concerned” about her health and advised her to remain under medical supervision.
