Must Read: The Rise of the Fashion Tumblr Generation, How Businesses Can Manage Tiktok’s Trend Cycle

These are the stories that are making headlines in fashion on Friday.

How the kids of fashion Tumblr found themselves and each other
For The Cut, Matthew Schneier explores some of Tumblr’s most notable fashion-focused users who have since become industry professionals. Interviews with actors such as actor Hari Nef, hair artist Sonny Molina, photographer Ethan James Green and more explore the path this group of online friends has taken to become the in-demand members of the next generation of fashion. Marcus Cuffie, a stylist whose Tumblr, “Dustulator,” is named after their favorite Rick Owens collection, explains, “If I didn’t have Tumblr, I never would have gotten into fashion.” {The cut}

How Businesses Can Mindfully Manage TikTok’s Lightning Fast Trend Cycle
Chavie Lieber of Business of Fashion dissects TikTok’s ever-changing trend cycle and, with the help of trend forecasters and marketing professionals, analyzes how companies can keep up – with caution. Benji Park, a TikTok forecaster and brand advisor, tells Lieber that most TikTok trends (“grandmother on the coast,” “two,” etc.) run in “90-day cycles,” with a lifespan of up to six months. Park also advises brands to use TikTok subcultures in faster social media marketing instead of banking entire wholesale orders with a trending look. {Business of Fashion}

Fashion has abandoned human taste in the name of rapid production
Amanda Mull of The Atlantic discusses the ongoing issue of fast-fashion brands producing copycat designs or, as Mull puts it, giving up human taste and judgment in fashion. Taking an example of Batsheva Hay and the modernization of the puff sleeve, she explains, “Puff sleeves filtered through the price levels, in one form or another, just like countless trends have done before” and why these copycat pieces “will be dated until it’s buying public can’t stand them anymore.” {The Atlantic Ocean}
