It sure looks like Julia Fox is on everyone’s makeup mood board for fall 2022

Black eyeliner – and a lot of it – is a big trend right now. That’s, at least in part, thanks to Julia Fox, an internet obsession of the moment, who has become known for her inky black eye makeup, which is, in fact, “[turns] her eyelids in two charcoal cavities,” as Jessica Testa of the New York Times so aptly put it recently.

Off the catwalks, Fox’s looks are the handiwork of makeup artist Daniel Kolaric. But the same extreme eye makeup aesthetic is also absolutely dominating the fall 2022 runways.

So far, we’ve seen a recurrence of over-the-top black smoky eyes on models at Roberto Cavalli, LaQuan Smith (where Fox himself walked), Sportmax, and Versace.

Pat McGrath — whose intricate and impressive runway eye makeup creations are the stuff of beauty legends — created a variety of goth-y makeup looks for the latest runway. The highlight was undeniably a Fox-esque look with a thick, dark ring around the eyes (also, of course, worn by Fox himself, who sat in the front row for the show).

According to McGrath, the catwalk makeup looks were intended to evoke “the new powerful, strong Versace woman, with the aim of “[representing] power with bold statements while remaining fresh and modern.” Black eye makeup is the beauty trend of the moment, hearing McGrath say: “Like I said during [the couture shows]it’s going to be a smoky spring.”

But while the Julia Fox version of this look seems to be the result of a Sharpie’s lazily scratching around the eyes or starting with a simple classic cat’s eye, just “solidify” the two sides until a giant ring forms around both eyes. , McGrath (of course) has a carefully honed technique for her iteration.

After prepping and perfecting the skin—a crucial McGrath signature—the makeup artist began creating a “blocked wing” shape with the Pat McGrath Labs PermaGel Ultra Glide Eye Pencil in Xtreme Black and topped it off with the Xtreme Black- shade of the Pat McGrath Mothership I: Subliminal palette, then spreading at the edges. (Fox’s usual signature is usually much harder and blunter at the edges than McGrath’s runway look.) For added impact and a bit of shine, McGrath then mixed the same black eye pencil with the balm from the Pat McGrath Labs Skin Fetish: Highlighter + Balm Duo. , who blends it over the lids to “create a translucent wash of color.” For added depth, the makeup pro then dusted off the same black eyeshadow on both the inner and outer corners of the eyes, as well as below the lower lash line. Finally, McGrath covered the models’ top and bottom lashes with Pat McGrath Labs Dark Star Mascara. A bit more nuanced and technical than the real Foxian eye might seem, for sure.
