In her early adult life, Amanda Gyllensparv enjoyed professional success but lacked personal satisfaction. “I graduated from high school in 2015. The first thing I tried to think about was whether I should go to college after high school, like so many of my friends and classmates did. My father always wanted me to become a lawyer, but at this stage of my life I wanted to gain real life experience rather than go to university,” she admits. “I tried a lot of different jobs, traveled and ended up working for a law firm for four years, much to my father’s delight. To be honest, it was okay, but no sparks flew and I definitely wasn’t passionate enough about law to go to college and study it – sorry Dad! I was still figuring out what I wanted to do with my life. It was never super clear what my passion was, because whatever I could find interest in, it could also turn into something boring for me pretty quickly. I was a bit indecisive to say the least! Friends of mine had a clear vision from an early age of what they wanted to do and what they were passionate about. I can’t lie – I envied that a bit. Not knowing where you are going can be stressful at times.”

Of course, once she left the law for new horizons, she fell more into using social media. “When days at the law firm started to feel like sleepwalking and no sense of accomplishment, I understood that it was only a matter of time before I had to find something new that gave me motivation and satisfaction. I’ve always been creative and from my previous experience working as an event manager, I knew I was pretty good at both knowing what people want and what they like. While I was working full time I didn’t have much energy to spend on Instagram and honestly I wasn’t very interested (yet). So when I finally quit my job thinking this was probably madness and risky when I didn’t even have a plan, I got the best advice. A trusted, very dear friend told me, “If you leave room for something new to come into your life, it could be something you never thought of, but something that it should be.” At this point, I knew I didn’t want to go to college or have an office job. I wanted something flexible and creative where I could travel easily and be in control of my schedule. And sure enough, suddenly I had all this time on my hand. Since the majority of society is active on social media, I thought I would be more active too. Don’t get me wrong, before I was what I would call “active” on Instagram, but now I could spend more time and be more creative and create content. And I started to love it! I loved creating and learned a lot in a short time.”

With great trepidation, she chose to embark on a full-time career in social media. “I’m a bit of a control freak and having a routine has always been important to me. Going from working full time to just quitting without a plan was really scary, I’m not going to lie! I think anyone in my situation would have doubted whether this was the right choice or not. I clung to hope and believe in myself that no matter what happened, it would always work out in the end. Even though it was way out of my comfort zone, it was also very exciting and exciting to break new ground without knowing exactly what lay ahead. I was lucky that everything went very quickly. As I started to focus more on my content, my account grew in size and engagement and brands started to proactively approach me. So it all happened in a few months.”

Being an influencer has given Amanda access to a whole new world. “I definitely love the interaction with people and the endless creativity. At least that’s what social media is to me. You meet and learn so much more about new people and connect. I’ve learned so much about my own mind and unlocked so much creativity that I didn’t know I had in me. I am also so happy to be able to work with new amazing people that I have had the opportunity to meet through this whole experience, such as my agency THE ACE Agency. I am so impressed with the entrepreneurship and drive these amazing women have, especially my agents Anna and Marie.” Unfortunately, no one is immune from trolling. “There are so many good people out there and it’s so nice to hang out with them and feel all the good vibes. Unfortunately, that is not always the case and there are people who project insecurities and bad energy onto myself and others. I think it’s very sad and this is something I think anyone active on social media can say is happening. Cyberbullying is a huge problem and it’s always important to mention that it’s never okay to bully other people, whether on social media or in real life. There is never an excuse. I personally do not accept bullying and if I feel attacked, my easiest solution is to remove that person from my account. Fortunately, the greater majority I meet on Instagram are all so vibrant and encouraging!”

She’s content with building her Instagram, at least for now. “I keep my path forward open. I’d love to make something physical of myself someday, but I’m not sure what that would be yet and there are so many possibilities. Right now I’m happy with what I’m doing. I’m hoping for great things, of course, but I’m not just hoping – I’m working to increase my social influence and get better. How this will happen, we’ll have to wait and see…” Hard work and determination can never lead you astray!
