Today we want to share tips on how to keep your jewelry safe while traveling. It’s the same things that make travel exciting, which also makes you feel vulnerable. You are going on a journey to a completely new place, in an accommodation that does not belong to you. You chase adventures and live at a faster pace than almost any other time. We love this, but the thrill only comes from getting out of our comfort zones.
For this reason, it is normal to be concerned that your precious jewelry will be lost or stolen while you are travelling. You can’t keep it in the same safe environment you’re used to, and you may find yourself going to places with higher crime rates. The only surefire way to not lose your jewelry while traveling is to leave it in your safe at home.
However, that doesn’t mean you lose your jewelry on a trip or that it isn’t worth taking with you. On the contrary, taking some steps to keep it safe can make you look expensive without too much worry.
To keep your jewelry safe while traveling, do the following.
Update your insurance
You must already have insurance that covers your belongings. This is your home contents insurance or your renters insurance. These policies are in effect to cover claims for theft, loss and damage to your items wherever you are in the world. But what about jewelry?
Your renters insurance will cover jewelry, but there are limits. The general limit for jewelry claims on renters insurance is $1,500 per claim. If you have expensive jewelry (such as a diamond engagement ring), you must take out specific insurance for these objects.
If you don’t have a cover for your jewelry, make sure you have one before you travel. If you don’t have time, leave your jewelry at home.
It is a pleasure to backpack around the world and stay in hostels to keep costs down. Even if you have the money to stay in a nice hotel, you may decide that the money is better spent elsewhere. Sharing a room with other travelers can be fun, and in most places the risks aren’t too great.
However, if you’re traveling with expensive jewelry, staying in a hostel is a risk too far. Even if you have a lock on your bag, you are too exposed to other people and there are too many opportunities to lose focus. You don’t want to come back from a shower to find that you left your bag open and your jewelry is gone.
Wear a portable locker lock
But staying in a hotel or a rented apartment does not necessarily guarantee safety. While they can provide a safe in your room, the property owner and staff have easy access to it. They can find ways to crack it open while you are away for the day.
You can prevent this by taking a portable safe lock with you when you travel. These locks are an affordable form of security that makes it much more difficult for anyone to get to your jewelry. There’s no surefire way to lock a small safe – some thieves like to take the entire safe – but it’s unlikely anyone will get past your extra lock.
Read more about local crime
One of the most common reasons tourists’ jewelry is stolen is because they don’t know much about the local crime. Many people think that because there is a moderate crime rate in their own neighborhood or city, they can deal with everything. However, crime differs from place to place. One city may have a lot of burglaries, while another is home to a hidden population of pickpockets.
As a result, people take their jewelry to places where the locals would never consider doing such a thing, and they face the consequences. If you prepare in advance by researching the crime in the area, with all the dos and don’ts, you can avoid making simple mistakes.
There is no guaranteed way to keep your jewelry safe while traveling. But if you use it wisely, theft becomes increasingly unlikely.
