Keep scrolling to find out more details about each of the dresses above. But first…here are a few tips to help you find the perfect mother of the bride dress! There are many traditions, rules and social faux pas associated with weddings. The best thing for everyone involved is to have open communication between the bride, groom, MOB and MOG!
Tip #1 | Don’t procrastinate
You should never wait to shop for an event that matters. But especially your MOB/MOG dress! Waiting creates fear and you end up choosing something you don’t really like because you feel like you’re out of time.
Another tip: Traditionally it is a kind of MOG to wait for the MOB to pick out her dress first. Make sure you give her plenty of time too! But when it really comes down to it, make sure you take good care of yourself too!
Tip #2 | Discuss “The Vision” with the Bride
I know that the mother-daughter dynamic is different for everyone and can be vulnerable. Before you go shopping, ask the bride what she has in mind so that you are both on the same page. If your mother-daughter relationship is tough, try making clothes shopping fun together. Plan a day for the two of you to have brunch, have a drink, talk about what you both want, share Pinterest inspiration and then go shopping together!
Another option: order a bunch of dresses online, try them on at home, pick your favorite (with the bride) and return the ones that didn’t work!
Tip #3 | Color Coordination
There are traditions that some people follow regarding color coordination with the wedding party. Some people say that the MOB dress should be a shade darker or a shade lighter than the bridesmaid dresses. Some brides care about this and some don’t…but you have to ask! If you like to follow the traditional rules, color coordination is something to keep in mind and can make your shopping experience even easier as the color is already determined for you!
Tip #4 | Be nice!
This tip as for the bride AND the MOB…
To The MOB: If you’re not used to buying dresses for special occasions, you’re not where you want to be with your goal weight, or you’re just nervous about finding the right dress, that’s completely normal! This can be a stressful shopping experience for you, but make sure to stay calm, patient and open to feedback. If you find yourself getting frustrated while shopping/trying, take a break. Don’t take out frustration on the bride.
To the Bride: Some moms hate shopping. Especially for dresses for special events. And finding a dress for your mom is just as important for her as it is for you to find yours. Be supportive and give your more filtered feedback. Your mom is a superhero and will do anything for you…be nice to her!
Tip #5 | timing
Try to time your shopping trip well. If the wedding is in the spring, spring styles won’t show up until after the holidays (at the earliest). If the wedding falls in the fall, you can probably find some fall styles in late August. Which doesn’t give much time for adjustments, looking for accessories and also giving the MOG time! So make sure you shop early OR go for something classic that doesn’t have to be “in season”.
Bonus tip | Plan for alternatives
Many special occasion dresses will not have a perfect fit. The hemline may be too long, the neckline may be too low, or one part of the dress may fit perfectly while another part is too big or too small. You can fix all that! Be sure to factor in variations in your clothing budget.

This turquoise blue/green color is on-trend for this year and looks great on all skin tones. The one-shoulder is really flattering if you have broad shoulders. And the jacquard metallic fabric looks so luxurious!
Beautiful in purple
Lavender is another popular color right now. But this dress also comes in a beautiful blush pink color. I love the dramatic ruffled shoulder and the flattering A-line silhouette.
Simple yet elegant
Halston makes beautiful dresses that are simple yet elegant. This bright pink dress has a beautiful drape and a cool knotted shoulder detail.
If you’re a subscriber, you know how much I love pink! This pink satin dress features a flattering v-neckline and an embellished belt that fits nicely at the waist. It is also available in green!
How pretty is this Bronx & Banco dress!? The pink metallic color is so pretty. Love the cinched waist details, blouson sleeves and leg slit!
Flattering wrap dress
This is a more casual MOB option, but still just as beautiful. It’s a wrap style dress, so it’s SUPER flattering. You could even wear this as a wedding guest!
This Cinq a Sept dress is another more toned-down option if you’re not interested in wearing a full dress to the wedding. The fabric is really nice and it’s very light.
Chic cocktail dress
If you’re going for cocktail attire, this is another great option! I love the midi length and the beautiful embroidered fabric.
Classic Navy Blue
You can never go wrong with a classic little blue dress. You can wear this dark blue dress again and again and it will never go out of style!
Modest but chic
If you want a classic, elegant and modest black dress, this is the one! Your arms are covered by the chic puff sleeves, your décolleté is covered by the elegant lace on the chest and the lace insert on the back gives the dress a twist.
If you are a fan of prints, this is a nice option. The embroidered flowers are the perfect amount of understated!
Bring on Drama!
Normally I wouldn’t recommend drama at a wedding… but as I always say, I like drama in my clothes, not my life! And this dress by Monique Lhuillier definitely brings the drama! I love the ruffles, the flattering Empire waist, the A-line silhouette, the flounce skirt and the one-shoulder neckline… it’s all so gorgeous!
