Great Outfits in Fashion History: Zöe Kravitz .’s Met Dress Decorated with Real Rose Petals

There are perfectly good celebrity-style moments, and then there are the looks that really stick with you, the ones you desperately try to recreate at home. In “Great Outfits in Fashion History,” fashionista editors revisit their all-time favorite jokes.

Every time Zöe Kravitz calls Fernando García and Laura Kim, you know something epic is about to happen on the red carpet. The black cat-corset dress from the “The Batman” premiere was just the latest example of their long-standing collaboration, which really took off when the designers dressed her for the 2017 Met Gala.

That year, the Costume Institute celebrated Rei Kawakubo and her work at Comme des Garcons with an exhibition entitled ‘Art of the In-Between’. While it wasn’t strictly on theme, Kravitz’s custom Oscar de la Renta gown made it into the pantheon of the greatest Met Gala looks of all time (for Team Fashionista, at least).

“Zöe’s favorite was a view from the runway with flowers on the bust, and it was actually Andrew [Mukamal, Kravitz’s stylist]”It’s the idea of working with someone who keeps flowers here in LA,” García told Dhani a few days after the Met Gala about how they made this possible. “So they sent them to us.”

The 2017 Met Gala came shortly after García and Kim made their runway debut as joint creative directors with Oscar de la Renta. The Kravitz dress combines the high craftsmanship and elegance of evening wear for which the house is known, building on a silhouette with an Audrey Hepburn-esque, old Hollywood feel and making it all its own with a bold, unexpected touch: real rose petals , painted black and attached to the bust and cape.

Kravitz went light on jewelry, the main accessories being a pair of oversized round diamond studs from Tacori (because if you’re a walking bouquet, why overdo it?). Her beauty was similarly understated — her longtime glam team (hairstylist Nikki Nelms and makeup artist Nina Park) created a bleached pixie cut, sharp black cat eye, and a peach lip.

“It was cool to see how collaborative and engaged they were… holding up fabrics, wanting to see what my personality was about and how I could bring that out with the dress,” Kravitz told the Hollywood Reporter about working that same year. with Garcia and Kim.

Kravitz’s Oscar de la Renta decorated with real rose petals may have been one of them, but you can buy pink-toned pieces inspired by the actor in the gallery below.
