Christian Siriano is all about fantasy. His biennial fashion shows – filled with layers of tulle, dresses that fill the runway and celebrities in the front row – create a world of our own, where we all have a reason to dress up and vampire. For Fall 2022, however, the designer lets you choose your own kind of fantasy: He invites you to enter a Victorian Matrix, where you either put on your brocades or don your latex gloves, depending on what your mood is that day.
“We live in this other world – are we in Victorian times, or are we in this alternate world of technology and reality? What are we doing?” he says. “I love that. That’s what the fabrics are: a mix of tech and very feminine, beautiful Victorian silhouettes; plastic in the most romantic of ways; lace that’s perforated and quilted.”
In Siriano’s Victorian Matrix you can choose from rich floral brocades or shiny latex leather. You could wear them both at the same time, if you wish. That’s kind of the point.
“I wanted fantasy. We need it. We have to have it,” Siriano argues. “Fashion is having such a hard time. We’re all getting beat up – magazines, customers… We’re all having a hard time. Let’s just have some fun and add some glamour.”
Siriano is a showman: he likes to put on the show and invite everyone. That is what he has become known for. However, there has been a new development in his preparation process – now he says he has shortened the time between designing and debuting a collection, a response to the past two years, born of a desire to be more in the moment. “That inspires me and continues to inspire me,” he says. “I can’t go out that far anymore because we never know what’s going to happen in our world tomorrow.”
And while Siriano has been consistent in its offerings season after season (there’s a reason Hollywood stylists have it on speed dial), the fall of 2022 manages to delight. Yes, there are gorgeous dresses for the red carpet, but there are also very elegant daytime propositions, thoughtful silhouettes and exciting materials, from quilted denim to mesh-like lapis tulle. Yet the evening is king for Siriano.
“Thank God we’ve had so many evening requests in the last four months — this is our moment, because people desperately want it. They really want it,” he says. “So I think that’s what we’re trying to give.”
