Today we want to share a checklist for a smooth road trip across the country. Summer is coming and we are all starting to think about booking and planning a vacation. Many people will be taking road trips across the country this summer, but before you hit the road, follow this checklist for a safe, smooth journey.
Why a road trip is a good choice for your next vacation
There are many benefits to choosing a road trip for your next vacation.
It allows you to escape from your daily routines. You have complete control over your own schedule. You can plan each stop, be totally spontaneous or anywhere in between! You can be adventurous and active as you please (or not, if you prefer to relax and unwind!) You can get off the beaten track and discover places that many people have never heard of. You wake up in new places and meet new people. You get to see more of our beautiful country. Road trips are great for any age and with any number of people, so you can go alone, as a couple, with your family or in a group of friends. Road trips give you plenty of time to think or spend quality time with your fellow travelers.
Essential things to consider before your trip
Sounds great, right? But before you hop in your car, here are a few essentials to consider before you travel.
Pack the essentials
When packing for your road trip, don’t forget your car essentials! Be sure to wear comfortable clothes – layers are best for long journeys when the weather changes, and don’t forget your sunglasses and raincoat! Bring plenty of drinks and snacks for everyone, and have motion sickness supplies on hand, just in case! If you’re taking kids or pets on your road trip, make sure they’re comfortable too.
Prepare for emergencies
Hopefully your road trip goes smoothly, but preparation is key. Make sure you have all the addresses and zip codes you need. Sat-nav is great, but just in case technology fails or your phone’s battery runs out, write down your destination address and some basic instructions. Paper maps are also a good idea and essential if you plan to go hiking or walking during your road trip. You should also always have a roadside emergency kit in your car. This should contain at least jumper cables, a flashlight with spare batteries, a signal vest and a first aid kit.
Make sure your car is in top condition
As part of your planning and preparation, take the time to ensure that your car has a valid MOT, is properly taxed, your insurance is valid and all your details are up to date. You can also arrange roadside assistance before you set off. Make sure you have all the important documents to hand when you travel, such as your car manual, your driver’s license and membership number for breakdowns.
Your car tires will do a lot of the work on your road trip, so make sure they have the right tread depth and air pressure. When it’s time for a new set of tires, change them before you travel! You should also check your car’s oil and fluid levels and top up if necessary. In bad weather, you’ll also want to check your wiper blades and washer.
