Aspen Travel Guide – Best Places to Visit and Eat

Ah, Aspen. A place where the mountains are pristine, the scene buzzes from day to night, and the beer flows like wine indeed, especially après ski. Whether or not you hit the slopes doesn’t matter in the lavish resort town high in the Rockies, as there’s plenty to do otherwise: post by the fire at The Little Nell with a glass of wine in hand, go out to dinner at award-winning restaurants (make sure to book well in advance) and visit vibrant art exhibits – Andy Warhol: Lifetimes at the Aspen Art Museum recently caught the attention of Kendall Jenner. Here’s what else you shouldn’t miss.

Even the most die-hard fans of the ubiquitous but famously elusive artist can learn a thing or two from this traveling exhibition, which originally began at London’s Tate Modern. Andy Warhol: Lifetimes explores the lesser-known details of Warhol’s life, such as how he began to embrace his queer identity and question conventions in both art and advertising.

Chanel’s Boutique pop up

Thanks to Chanel

While there’s no shortage of shops in downtown Aspen, Chanel’s new two-story boutique is a must-see, even with a line away. With interiors that pay tribute to Coco Chanel’s apartment at 31 Rue Cambon (think: white and beige with touches of black and gold), you’ll be coveting everything from the wool tweed sofas to the gloves and goggles.

ASPENX

Daniel Bayer

Conveniently located at the base of Aspen Mountain (aka Ajax), far from the average rental shop, ASPENX has it all: designer skis (from the retailer’s limited-edition partnership with Prada), brand new gear, pastries and coffee to – go whenever you want. A real luxury experience.

Ajax Tavern

For a quick and satisfying meal after a day on the mountain, head to Ajax Tavern, a stone’s throw from the Silver Queen Gondola. With bistro fare with a laid-back vibe (casual winter boots and sweaters are totally fine here), you’re in and out — and very full. Order the lamb bolognese with a side of people watching.

The Snow Lodge

Thanks to The Snow Lodge

The team behind The Surf Lodge in Montauk is bringing its cast of rotating DJs and hard-to-reach doors west with The Snow Lodge, a new restaurant concept with a seasonal menu in the St. Regis. Aside from the after-dinner atmosphere in the Red Room, the artist-in-residence program is worth checking out – a recent installation by multi-degradable artist Heart Evangelista includes a range of painted designer bags, including Birkins.

Campo de Fiori

Don’t let its location down the Mill Street Mall fool you: if you want good Italian in Aspen, Campo de Fiori is your best bet. One of the city’s low-maintenance yet delicious eateries, the dishes don’t disappoint, especially the generous helping of frutti di mare. No frills, no hassle.

Snow Beach is straight out of a Gray Malin photo – literally. Inspired by the artist’s signature aerial photographs taken everywhere from Miami to the Mediterranean coast, the piste-side location atop Ajax offers expansive views, cabanas and even bottle service. This is an experience that begs to be posted on Instagram.

Oenophiles, take note: The Little Nell’s world famous wine program now has a new home. This is a solid choice for those looking to kick back and relax around cocktail hour, although later in the evening the vinyl DJ booth and champagne case are completely out.

If you manage to get an invite to Caribou, Aspen’s first private club for members, you’d be remiss not to try it out. Before or after dinner, sip a cocktail by the fire in the Great Room—an ultra-luxury alpine lodge that looks straight out of Twin Peaks—and enjoy being seated in one of the most exclusive haunts in town.

The Little Nell, the crème de la crème of the resorts, is not only the first five-star five-diamond hotel in Aspen, it offers ski-in, ski-out access, a heated outdoor pool and hot tub, three restaurants and incomparable hospitality (truffles at turndown service? Don’t mind if we do that!). It’s no surprise that Beyoncé and Jay-Z, Justin Bieber and Paris Hilton are all regulars.

In addition to the unbeatable views of Ajax, W Aspen teamed up with Select Aperitivo on the Select Slopeside pop-up this ski season, allowing guests to enjoy rounds of spritzes and live music in front of an open fire at their leisure. A little bit of Italy in Aspen, why not?
