Transition Style Tips

#1) Update to a fall color palette

The little white dress is a heavy hitter for the summer, but you don’t have to relegate it to the back of your closet in the fall! On the left, my summer look includes an Alexis mini dress that probably looks just for summer, right? Especially in combination with the white Bottega Veneta handbag and colorful Veronica Beard wedges. But you can easily make it fall-ready! I added a neutral-colored boyfriend blazer from Reiss and a Rag & Bone felt hat. I also exchanged the wedges for a pair of neutral boots and the white handbag for a taupe clutch. A taupe, honey brown, beige or black bag will help your look “fall”.

TIP: Wearing a dress will make your legs longer by matching the booties to your skin tone.

2) Wear boots or booties

Another really easy way to make summer tops, skirts, jeans and dresses look more seasonal is to swap your sandals for boots or booties. The cinched waist and v-neckline on this BB Dakota mini dress are so flattering and pretty. It’s on the short side (even for me at 5’4″) so if you’re taller that might be a consideration. In the summer I had paired it with a pair of retro Dolce Vita wooden platform sandals. To send right into fall I added a black faux leather blazer from Alice + Olivia. This blazer is buttery soft and the leather really completes the look!I also added a pair of sheer gray tights, a cute western inspired belt and my favorite Isabel Marant slippers I bought in Spain last year See how easy that was?

Here are a few more ways I styled this dress (which is under $90, by the way)!

#3) Swap shorts for pants or jeans

This Reiss top is very light and summery, but I can transition it effortlessly by simply swapping the shorts for jeans. This is the easiest way to swap out all your summer tops! On the left, I’m wearing comfy AMO shorts, a white Prada bag and See by Chloe wedges. To transition into fall, I pulled on the same Reiss blazer I wear in #1 and swapped the shorts for a Moussy Vintage jeans. I also decided to switch to a black YSL handbag and See by Chloe combat boots. The black boots and bag definitely make the outfit more suitable for fall. Think about what you already have in your closet that can help you make these wardrobe transitions!

#4) Add a layer

Let’s face it, a white t-shirt is one of those basics you need for all seasons… short sleeve, long sleeve or elbow length like this Nation LTD crew neck t-shirt. Add a motorcycle jacket, blazer or bomber over a white t-shirt and jeans to make your look more suitable for the fall season. In my summer look I’m wearing the white t-shirt with flared Paige jeans which are the perfect length for me (I’m 6’8), and a pair of shockingly comfortable black L’Agence pointed heels. For my fall look, I just added some black booties and… the star of the show… a mixed media Sam Edelman trench. I love this trench coat so much! The faux leather details against the olive green (it looks brown in the photo, but trust me, it’s green!) just screams.

#5) Add a thick sweater or cardigan

Your dark floral print dresses in black and brown are pretty easy to transition from summer to fall. But to make your traditionally more summery floral dress feel like fall, you need to think and strategy. Am I up for the challenge? You bet that’s me. This gorgeous pink Saloni dress sold out so quickly, but I linked a similar option above. Paired with mesh ankle wrap sandals, it’s a head-to-toe summer look. With light/bright flowers, the trick is to use a lighter color palette for the whole look as you head into fall. On the right, I’m wearing an oversized, cozy, fuzzy cardigan from Elisabetta Franchi that I bought in Spain, and high white stiletto boots with a crocodile print from Schutz. So yes, you can extend the life of your summer floral dresses into fall with a light-toned sweater.

#6) Try a longline vest

You might think that this white embroidered top has a limited shelf life. Or maybe you think of light denim as a summer wash. BUT when I add in a longline cardigan and Rag & Bone sneakers, even though they’re in a lighter color palette, you see how it looks instantly fall-ready. Cardigans are great transitional pieces because they give you some coverage and warmth, but less than a heavy jacket or coat. This vest continues to go in and out of stock, but you can achieve the same look with a similar option. I bought these sneakers in both black and this neutral color because I loved them so much and can’t get over how comfortable they are.
